TASP Test
The state of Texas, in order to ensure that all students enrolling in public colleges and universities have the skills and aptitudes to handle college level academics, requires all prospective students to take a skills test designed to measure these things before enrolling. (Some students are exempt if they achieve certain scores on the ACT or SAT).
There are several options, but one of the most common tests is the Texas Academic Skills Program test, or TASP test. Failure to pass the TASP test doesn’t mean a student can’t attend college, but it does mean that they’ll have to take certain developmental course to work on their weak areas. And if by the end of their sophomore year, if a student can’t pass the TASP test, they will not be allowed to continue at a public college in Texas, or receive a two year degree from a public institution. So mastering the test is a must, and passing it on your first try will greatly enhance your college experience, as well as take a load off your mind.
There are three sections on the test-reading, writing , and math. Once you pass a section, you don’t have to take it again, even if you fail the others. The test is given at all colleges and universities, and many high schools. It takes five hours to complete, and you can use as much or as little time on each section as you desire. The math portion consists of 40-50 multiple choice questions on basic math, algebra, and geometry, along with word problems. The reading section has 40-50 questions that you’ll answer regarding seven passages you’ll be given to read. The writing section contains some questions; in addition, you’ll be writing an essay on an assigned topic. It’s important that you pass the TASP if you want a college degree, and the earlier you pass it the better.
