TCAP Test

Tennessee, like many other states, has embarked on an ambitious program to raise the quality of the level of education their students receive, and to require that students meet minimum standards before receiving a high school diploma. This is known as the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Plan, or TCAP.

Tennessee is doing this to attract jobs and industry to the state with a better educated work force, and to ensure that their students have the education necessary to fill those jobs. There are several different tests in the TCAP program, but not all of them have the 'must pass to get a diploma' status. The three courses that every student must pass to graduate are Math, Biology, and Language Arts. To pass the Math test, a student will need to have mastered the skills taught in all math courses up to and including Algebra 1, or Math for Technology. Passing the Biology portion will require a mastery of Biology 1, or Science for Technology. Language Arts assumes an English II level of everything that has to do with reading and writing. All three tests are multiple choice, and parents will receive their child's score approximately two weeks after the test. Passing TCAP can be a challenge, but it's certainly doable, as thousands of students do it every year.
