DAT Scoring

The scoring system for the DAT is fairly simple; raw scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly. In other words, the scoring system does not distinguish between unanswered questions and questions answered incorrectly. This means that candidates should guess when they do not know the answer to a question. The raw score is then converted into a score on a scale from 1 to 30. This scaling process takes into account minor differences in difficulty between different versions of the exam. A score of 17 is considered to be average. Some of the questions on the exam are pretest questions, which help to develop future versions of the exam. These questions are not scored, and will be impossible to distinguish from other questions.
Because the DAT is administered via computer, a comprehensive score report will be available to the student immediately upon finishing the exam. This score report will include both scaled scores and percentile equivalents, so that candidates can see how their scores match up against those of other students. This score report is considered to be unofficial; official score reports will be mailed to the relevant dental schools three or four weeks after the examination.
