The TEAS Reading Test (In-Depth)
The TEAS Reading test is one of the longer subtests featured on the ATI TEAS exam. You will be given approximately 55 minutes to complete 45 questions. Every question featured on the test will pertain to a specific reading selection, which you will have to read and analyze for both surface and critical elements. Each question breaks down into four specific categories—Pretest Questions, Key Ideas and Details, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, and Craft and Structure. Pretest Questions
It’s worth noting that this knowledge category is an exception to the other three. Rather than being focused on one particular subject, the questions under this category are more like “preview” questions for future versions of the ATI TEAS exam. They’re meant to gauge whether certain questions will fit well into the currently existing content of the exam, or whether they need to be tweaked or removed altogether.
Pretest questions will look identical to regular test questions, although they will not count toward your overall score. You will not be able to tell pretest questions apart from “real” test questions, so we encourage you to put equal effort into all questions featured on the test.
The Key Ideas and Details knowledge category will involve your ability to read a text, comprehend the details of it, and pull information and/or draw conclusions based upon the text. You will be expected to compose a timeline of events within a work; point out exact tidbits of information, as well as the central theme of a given work; and piece together a synopsis of a passage, among other tasks.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
The Integration of Knowledge and Ideas category of the ATI TEAS 7 test will draw upon your critical thinking skills. Questions under this category will ask you to look at the text you’ve read and examine the types of assertions they’re trying to make, sometimes from more than one type of text at once. You will also have to interpret what you’ve read in order to make solid, reasonable conclusions, as well as pinpoint different types of informational sources.
Craft and Structure
The Craft and Structure category will focus on how well you can discern how a written piece has been organized and the choices an author made while writing the work, as well as infer what may have led the author to compose the work in such a way. You will have to assess the perspective of the author, as well as figure out the definitions of specific words and whether a statement is subjective or objective, alongside similar skills.
