Few subjects are more universally dreaded than math. In fact, for most people, the idea of doing anything math-related seems to conjure up images of poring at endless amounts of numbers and trying to figure out where to start with solving a complicated set of problems. However, if you’re planning to pursue a nursing career, math is a very important skill to possess.
The team behind the ATI TEAS 7 understands this, which is why they have included a math subtest on the ATI TEAS exam. You are likely well aware of just how important the ATI is to your enrollment in any allied health or nursing school program. The entire purpose of the ATI TEAS exam, after all, is to gauge your comprehension of the skills you’ll need to thrive in any allied health course. There’s no doubt that the nursing field involves quite a bit of mathematical knowledge, which is why it was included on the exam. If you want to earn a passing score, you’ll have to brush up on your knowledge of math.
However, you don’t have to face this important exam alone. The Mometrix Test Preparation team is here to help you with an in-depth description of what to expect from the exam, as well as the tools you’ll need to study to the absolute fullest.
How the ATI TEAS Math Subtest Works
While the ATI TEAS Math subtest doesn’t have quite as many questions as other sections you’ll find on the test, it will still take quite a bit of time to complete. To be specific, you will receive 57 minutes in all to complete 38 questions.
Before we go into more detail about the contents of the TEAS test for math, we should mention two important pieces of very good news. First, you will be allowed to use a calculator on the Math subtest. Second, none of the math you’ll find here exceeds what you may have learned and worked with while you were in high school. This means you are less likely to come across any problems that are too unfamiliar for you to work through.
The three categories you’ll come across on the Math subtest include Pretest Questions, Measurement and Data, and Numbers and Algebra.
Pretest Questions
Each and every subtest featured on the ATI TEAS exam features a small set of “pretest questions,” which are meant as a sort of survey for new questions that may be published on new formats of the ATI. If you and other test takers perform well on these questions, they may be included on the exam in the future. These questions will not affect your score, but you won’t be able to tell them apart from actual test questions. Because pretest questions are indistinguishable from regular questions, it will be in your best interest to answer all questions as accurately as you can.
The Numbers and Algebra knowledge category will relate specifically to your ability to work with numerals on multiple levels. You will be expected to render a given statement into an equation or expression; work with proportions, percentages, and rational numbers; and rework percentages into decimals and fractions, as well as vice versa. Much of the work you’ll be expected to do here will be no different from what you encountered while studying Pre-Algebra and Algebra.
Measurement and Data
Questions under the Measurement and Data knowledge category will assess your capabilities with the two major systems of measurement (metric and standard), as well as how well you can work with different types of data presentations. Some questions will present you with graphs or tables and expect you to analyze it accordingly. You will also be asked to measure surface areas, angles, and other geometry-based properties, as well as figure out how a pair of variables relate to one another.
